New podcast: Norwegian Made Easy

I have my difficulties with Norwegian. First of all, the idea of tones in a European language is odd to me. Too, I get taken in by the fact that it's a Germanic language: while that makes vocabulary acquisition easier for me (and for other native speakers of English or German), I get fooled easily. That is, I'll read a paragraph of simple Norwegian text and grasp it, but I'll be wildly off on the pronunciation. The language has silent consonants as well as the tonal aspects I mentioned before, so for me, pronunciation minefields abound -- and I'm good at finding them. Arrgh.

That said, I have professional and personal reasons for wishing to acquire decent conversational Norwegian. The Norwegian Made Easy podcast is put out by a native Norwegian speaker, his voice is pleasant, and his English is good. One other nice feature -- not always found in language methods -- is that the spoken Norwegian is offered at a normal conversational pace, so you're not fooling yourself that you can understand something spoken in Norwegian. Nice touch.

There is no text available, although for my purposes, that's a plus: I need to accustom myself to hearing and pronouncing Norwegian as Norwegian, not as German, not as English (I like the Pimsleur Norwegian lessons for the same reason). You may find that the clarity of some of the spoken phrases could be improved...I'm not sure. I think part of that may be my learner's discomfort with Norwegian. Or the speed, and if that's the case, I expect it will prove to be a boon rather than a burden -- after the initial hurdles.

At any rate, I like Norwegian Made Easy. I look forward to more podcasts, and I hope it find its way to iTunes.
