Feasting, drinking, football, cheerleaders, and the beginning of the busiest shopping season of the year: I realized yesterday that Thanksgiving really is the sensual holiday. Gary Hull would probably agree, and you can read his take on Thanksgiving here. Another Gary--Gary North--probably wouldn't agree with that assessment, but he still has some interesting observations to make on the holiday, including remarks on marginal utility and how it relates to the real story of Thanksgiving (it does), which you can read here. Bill Kaufmann discusses the only New Deal flight of fancy which FDR ever renounced, and my friend Lowell Ponte weaves through turkey, coffee, Lysenkoism, and freedom in his own Thanksgiving musing.
What do I have to say about my favorite holiday? Why, it's all about marginal utility and beer, of course and you can read about the beer at The Atlasphere.
Joshua Zader of Mudita Journal has posted his interview with blogger Stephen Green of VodkaPundit, which you can read at The Atlasphere. Just a hint:
Green:I think style can--it doesn't necessarily, but it can--have a substance all its own.
I don't want to live in a drab world. Ayn Rand wrote about drab worlds in her novels, and her heroes fought against it constantly. So what's wrong with a little fun, a little style, with a little silliness. I think those things make you a little brighter. And make the rest of the world a lot more bearable.
Make sure you pay attention to the last bit, too.
A nice item I found online today is Beethoven Radio. From WTMI -AM 1290 (in Connecticut, I believe). They play requests, they refer to themselves as "classical music without the attitude," and they offer pretty good stuff, along with variety: so far I've listened to Brahms, Glazounov, Gershwin, Barber, Elgar, and Bach. In fact they have a weekday feature they call "Bach's Lunch," and another devoted to the guitar.
UPDATE: Anyone know of a similar internet service offering opera?
Established on November 10, 1775, the United States Marine Corps is 228 years old today. Semper Fi, guys.
Why not wish a Marine a happy birthday, right now?
