Hell, yes.
Glenn Reynolds got that title from Hugh Hewitt. I like it, too.
She's been called the "Muslim Madonna." Yes, it means what you think it means. And she's received death threats because of it, too.
I know you're shocked.
Check out her video, here. Actually it's a pretty good song. The duct tape images are effective in making her point. Take a look at some of the other links, too (including lyrics).
Yeah, Deeyah's a babe. She's also a free speech hero.
Posted by Craig Ceely at February 26, 2006 10:58 AMVery telling!
For her safety, and in hopes of shifting the focus off of the “news story” and back on the music, Brainwash Records has brought Deeyah and her album to the US.
Posted by: BridgetB at February 27, 2006 11:44 AMI wish Europe would take the death threats more seriously.
Why is there never any follow up? I want to see arrests.
That said, it's become quite popular to provoke Muslims, and it's easy enough to get a handful riled up to hold up as exemplars of the whole faith...to avoid any serious discussion of what "they" have to say, of course. Who's to say this isn't a PR stunt? It certainly worked for the Danish papers...
Deeyah is a little hard to take seriously. Here she is flashing her booty a-la Hip Hop star..not the most female friendly genre, and she's lecturing Muslims on double standards? Whatever...
Problematic with her "challenge" is that it doesn't serve as a convincing argument against modest dress (which both, men and women practice in the Muslim world...so no double standard there), the people who she claims to be defending (i.e. Muslim women) would shudder if they saw how she was dressing (irony?), and the way she positions herself is a bit of a cheap-shot: no doubt, any criticism of her will simply be dismissed as excusing or siding with honor killers. Nice way to kill a discussion before it even starts.
I hope Muslims won't be baited by her. It's interesting, though...Ali G may be kicking himself for not taking the "Muslim poser" angle to this extent :-)
